I love this thing. I’m in a different city every 4 to 5 days, so I never know where I am. The 785T is a perfect traveling tool. It always gets me where I’m going. It’s much better than the Magellan that comes in many rental cars.

Mp3s loaded on a SD card, it plays through the FM radio if the car doesn’t have a auxiliary input,so there is not any trouble hearing it. (the onboard speaker is a little weak) Directions are clear and accurate. The onboard battery allows me to program it while I’m in the hotel room. I have not tried the traffic avoidance.

The refurbished price was right, and there is no distingushing it from a brand new unit.

The only slight negative so far is the QWERTY keyboard doesn’t seem to be as accurate as I’d like to be. Maybe it’s just fat fingers, but I make a lot of mistakes. I wish it would take a zipcode, instead of having to type in the City name.

Anyway, I recommend it.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

The nüvi 785T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. Lane Guidance

In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care – supermarket-cleaners – office – day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. I purchased this as a replacement for my stolen Garmin 760. I loved the old GPS, but amazon mentioned this was the more recent version, now for about the same price. I love the features on it – lane assist, choice of voices, multi-destination trip planning, 3D map view, etc. I’m just a little disappointed because it takes a while to load maps sometimes, or find a satellite, so the system gets “lost” sometimes even if I’m just stuck in traffic for too long in one spot. And the traffic feature has been fairly accurate on delays, but wrong in where they are located. It also is a little slow reading things you enter on the touch pad. So, for example, when typing in my passcode or destination, I type for a bit and it looks like it’s not working, so I double-press keys, and all of a sudden the device will “catch up” with me and I’ve overtyped the info. I’m learning to copy with it, but it’s annoying. So, overall, I think it’s an amazing device with features I love, but the execution is not ideal. The old version definitely worked more smoothly. There wasn’t an option for 1/2 stars, so I rated this a 4, but I think it’s more like 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

I have used this unit for like 4 days now and I must say I feel badly let down. Though it works well as expected, the unit has a feel of cheapness around it especially with the graphics of the map. For a company like Garmin, I would have expected their graphics to be sharp and crisp instead it comes across like graphics from 10 years ago when compared to the graphics on Sprint Telenav. While navigating and when approaching a section of the highway that splits, the unit is supposed to display a pictorial image of the road and the exit sign so as to serve as extra guide, well mine hasn’t shown any of that yet.

My second gripe with the unit is the limited amount of data on display while navigating. It is good to have data like speedometer, speed limit, time of arrival, exit information, and name of street driving on displayed, but when you have to punch the screen to access other information like distance to destination especially, or time at destination, or other fun information, it gets really annoying.

The call clarity of its bluetooth is nothing to write home about. I’ve used navigon’s GPS system before and there’s worked far much better than this one, so I have had to resort to using my bluebooth headset.

Not that it is a piece of crap, the unit is actually an impressive gadget. It is slick and not bulky. When powered on, it doesn’t take long to obtain a gps signal. The windshield mount was properly thought out as it is very easy to mount and unmount the unit. Although the map that came with it was out of date, I was allowed to update it without charge. There is also another neat little feature that I found on it: ecofuel. It monitors your speed and compares it to your mpg usage to let you know how eco friendly your driving is. Lastly, I am pleased that there is a lock security code on it to prevent unauthorized use, though it would have been nice if you can set the unit to time out when standing still after a predetermined amount of time.

I am going to return it as I am not completely satisfied.

Garmin’s customer suport has gone down the tubes. I was unable to update the map on my unit as it got stuck – thought it went thru. Getting ready for my trip and discovered the unit is OUT OF DATE and Garmin says, so sorry about your disappointment but you can purchase an updated map. The unit won’t even find a Walmart for crying out loud. They said 60 days and its been 90 days but the map wouldn’t not load on day 5. SHAME ON YOU GARMIN.

As the owner of a Magellan unit, we needed a GPS device that could interface with our Mac. I have no problems with the software, though the process of getting a custom map from your Mac to the device is poorly documented. It required an email to customer service to have the process explained. Basically, after sending the custom map to the 785T from “Roadtrip” on your computer, you have to go to “Custom Maps” on your device and download your new map.

Overall the GPS unit works well though I was disappointed to learn that all Garmin units lack the turn chimes used by our Magellan. One nice feature is that the 785T finds the satelites much faster than our previous GPS devices.

Basically, you buy a GPS unit to get you where you need to go and the 785T does what it is supposed to do.

I replaced a Magellan GPS with a Garmin Nuvi 785T and am really pleased with what technology has come up with in the 5 years since I first purchased the Magellan. The Nuvi is filled with helpful features and is so user friendly. My only disappointment is that the MSN service is going to be discontinued. I like the added convenience of finding gas prices, movie times, etc. Maybe something new will come out that can be downloaded to the unit. Overall I really like the way the Garmin operates. I don’t think anyone would be unhappy with this product.

I used to use Navman ICN 630 & this is an improved version in the sense that this has all maps etc but same interface. Navman is Good but i think Garmin c330 is much better & 0 cheaper.

I got rid of my ICN 630 & am using C330. I am very pleased that i did. See my review of c330 as well. It wins handsdown over any other GPS for automotive purposes.

I’ve now had my Tom Tom for my Palm Treo for 7 months. We have used it for a “wander” where we decided where to go on the fly through the mid section of the country, and last used it for Southern California navigation. On the wander, we found Google maps better for deciding what was possible, but the Tom Tom far better for navigation. The POI lists are good, but for “what if” type inquiries about where to go, another software was found superior. The maps were, however, very good once we decided where to go. It also tried hard not to let us go into the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park, full of switchbacks, but eventually convinced it to take us there. It was helpful to show us how many more hairpin turns we had to go and we had an error free drive.

When we took it to CA, after flying into LA area, we had to drive to the coast in the dark. It was accurate all the way to the door of our rented beach house. It found a very nice back way inland by its fast re-routing when we had decided to go 15 miles out of our way for an In and Out Burger.

My palm had more trouble with maintaining bluetooth connection. Keeping power to the system was also a problem in that my long lasting battery was totally fatigued by using the car adapter the whole trip. Clarity on the screen was always very good. Verbal directions were comprehendible and in time for action. I have enjoyed this product for specific uses, not every day navigation.

I purchased this with a Freedom Keychain GPS unit. It has worked very well with constant car adapter power. It fatigued too quickly otherwise for our wander.

This will only install if you don’t update the desktop software. The documentation could be better! The screen on the Omnia isn’t quite the right size for this software but is quite usable. Once installed it works great.

to convert my AT&T Tilt to a stand alone GPS is a great deal. Seems to be correct in directions although I only use it on rare occasion. Be forwarned that the GPS drains battery life fast! Tom Tom offers an upgrade but it claims the upgrade does not support pda phones.

I like that I have full Tom TOm on my windows mobile phone! Worked really well when we moved across the country! Only grip has to do with Tom Tom, not the seller. Tom Tom POI’s are not very updated and makes it more difficult to find options. I tend to use Tom TOm to route if I know an address, but I still use google maps for finding a place…
