Garmin MapSource TOPO! US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD)

Garmin 010-11315-00

Software is adequate! It does take awhile to load, but the maps work for what they are meant. I use it for hunting and fishing, it works great! If you are relying on software to tell you where to go in the wilderness…you probably should stay in the city! A GPS and its software are helpful and useful for marking waypoints (campsite, parking spot, good fishing holes, where you have been). This software is designed for ASSISTING in getting you out of potential bad situations and marking spots you have been. The software is not, as much as everyone wants to believe and as is advertised, for helping you find a trail. You, the outdoorsmen, should find your own friggin trail, and not rely a satellite dependent object! Buy the software for what it is meant for, accompany it with tried and true maps, a good old fashioned compass, and your senses- you will be just fine! Like I said, the software works fine, importing and exporting data are easy, install of the product takes awhile (does that really matter), and reading the maps on the unit are easy enough. If you are going to nit-pick every detail of the program you probably should never shop for anything again, because like everything else in life, the product is not perfect, but adequate.

Incredibly frustrating – Walter E. Anderson – Austin, Texas USA
I purchased two 24K map DVD’s for my Garmin Colorado 450. The maps themselves are detailed and very readable on the GPS. Very useful on the trail. That alone is why I am giving these DVD’s three stars. Everything else about them is poorly executed.

First, the provided BaseMap software, is bug ridden and frequently freezes, crashes, or simply refuses to work. For instance, I had it installed prior to the purchase because I used the BirdsEye Satelite photography. The first installed 24K Map DVD went fine; however, when I started Basemap after that install it chugged along for awhile and then aborted after about 15 minutes. A restart seemed fine. This process repeated itself when I installed the second 24K Map DVD. While performing Birdseye downloads, the software/USB connection to the GPS will frequently freeze and require that the computer be restarted to get everything working again (about every third download).

Finally, the installation of a full card (4GB limit) of 24K topo maps to the GPS takes 10-12 hours on my computer. This computer is used to run ArcMap with multi-gigabyte data sets and is not normally so slow. Something about the multistage processing that the Basemap software does with the 24k topo maps is done incredibly slowly. Which in an of itself would be tolerable (barely) if it wasn’t for the fact that the Basemap software crashed twice doing the install process…

It appears that Garmin has focused solely on the devices they sell and are not putting sufficient resources into the accessories and software that are also required. Sounds like a great opportunity for another company to push them out of the business of selling GPS devices and accessories.

Gamin 4 corners map! – Brent Ewasiuk –
A detailed map of 4 southwest states, but not the same as USGS issued maps. Some points of interest are not on there, but this is the only one that Garmin takes.

Garmin, what were you thinking? – Gadget Geek – Sunny Arizona
(Relates to TOPO U.S. 24K Southwest map set and included BaseCamp mapping software) Garmin MapSource TOPO! US 24k Southwest Topographic Coverage of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (DVD)TOPO 24K is very disappointing when it comes to some roads and features. I also have Garmin’s MapSource US TOPO maps (1998) and am more satisfied with that.
Although TOPO 24K has much more relief detail, it lacks many of the roads and manmade features that the MapSource maps had. A natural gas pipeline runs near my house and a dirt road runs its length. The pipeline is shown on the MapSource map set, but it is missing from the TOPO 24K map set. Dirt roads that branch off from that pipeline are also missing, although MapSource shows them. Many dual-track roads shown in MapSource are reflected as barely viewable trails in TOPO 24K. Consequently, planning a route is next to impossible without the roads/trails for reference.
I use the TOPO 24K map set on my Oregon 450t for the elevation and relief detail, but I plan my routes in MapSource using the older map set and then upload routes to my device.
If relief detail is more important to you than content, you might like this one. If content is more important to you, I don’t think you’ll be satisfied with TOPO U.S. 24K.

Update (6/11/2010): Regarding BaseCamp, when connected to the Internet and a software update is available, the program startup is interrupted and a splash screen tells you to update the BaseCamp software. It then closes out without allowing the user to use the current version. The update is extremely difficult to locate – it is not located in the “Map Update” area. Garmin should allow the option of “Update Now” instead of making the user manually find the update. Bad design by Garmin.

Pros:
- Great relief detail
- Easy to move routes, waypoints and tracks to folders

Cons:
- Missing many roads, trails and manmade features
- Not backwards compatible with MapSource map sets (although MapSource can view both old and new map sets)

Garmin 010-11031-00

I have it mounted on a fishing kayak. It is very convenient and sturdy. Highly recommend for marine use.

ONLY FOR MOUNTING UNIT PERMANENTLY – L. Ashley – TUCSON, AZ
Bought this mount to attach a Garmin Approach G5 to my golf cart. Great quality product, but not what I needed. It must be screwed or bolted to the cart to be used and once the G5 is mounted in it, it is very difficult to remove. Not great for golf when you sometimes need to walk to your ball and would like the GPS with you. Returned the item and have since ordered a Ram mount (not now available from Amazon) which is much more portable. It was about the same price, but I could not take advantage of Amazon’s free delivery.

Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with U.S. Topographic Preloaded Maps

Garmin 010-00622-45

Was very happy initially with the unit when it arrived but quickly found out that the included user manual is pretty much worthless. I tried to find any additional user information from Garmin and nothing in book form is currently available. I did find out about a company called Bennett Marine Video that has a DVD’s for almost every GPS unit and one specifically for the Colorado 300 and 400 series GPS. Not sure exactly what it contains but it is the only aftermarket product that contains more info than what’s in the user manual. Also have noticed some issues with accuracy on this unit initially while doing some geocaching with my son locally. Had problems getting the thing to stabilize and quit bouncing around. Also had some accuracy problems when using it while snowshoeing in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area in Colorado. It would not lock onto the trail I was supposed to be following and I ended up totally losing the trail. This was a bit more than an inconvience when you are hiking in 5 to 10 feet of snow and cannot see the trail. I have become more familiar with its features and have done some communicating with Garmin support, have uploaded the 24K Topo series maps and upgraded the operating system software to the the new beta version and it seems to be a little more accurate. Will be testing it out again in the Rockies in a few weeks and see if accuracy in the mountains has gotten better. I like many of the features, like being able to add or remove shortcuts from the main screen and only have the ones you really need displayed. The battery life is great with 2700ma NiMH batteries and I have not had any problems with viewing the display in bright sunlight. The backlight is also great in poor lighting conditions. I would highly recommend investing in a screen protector. It’s cheap insurance and they are easily replaced. I did find out that the built in thermometer not very accurate displaying the ambient air temperature probably due to the insulating effect of the GPS body. The bottom line I guess the best way to learn about this beast is just keep playing with it until someone puts together a decent manual. Will update this review once I finish my next wilderness trek and see how the accuracy does with the new maps and updated software.

Eats batteries! – Roland K. Takayama – Santa Barbara, CA
Unit works well and the rock n roller wheel is handy. While elk hunting in Arizona I set a waypoint at the truck, then entered the forest. Tried to navigate back to the truck, but the unit was sending me in the wrong direction. I navigated back on my own and the unit said the truck was 5.3 miles to the northeast. All other attempts to navigate back to a waypoint worked well, just this once it was inaccurate. The only other issue is that it eats AA batteries like crazy. Will have to investigate rechargeable batteries to correct this issue.

Satisfied customer – A. Miller –

This product has been great straight out of the box. Great for geocaching. Poor quality and customer service from Magellan drove me to Garmin, and I’m glad I made the switch.

Garmin 400t colorado – Nashmeter – Northern California, USA
I received my 400t about a month ago. It seems to work very well. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that most of the trails that I regularly go on aren’t on the built in map. Since this was supposed to be the trail model for hiking and such, I expected to have it loaded with most of the trails that I go on. I guess I will have to buy the upgraded map to get them at a cost of 129.00. Other then that, It seems to be a great unit. I have used the Geo-caching part and it works great. Lots of fun!

Garmin Colorado 400c Portable GPS System with Preloaded Coastal Waters Maps

Garmin 010-00622-61

I couldn’t have asked for anything better for the price. I have used this over the past 4+ months without a hitch. My first experience was a trip via our speedboat from Bonita Springs, FL to the Keys (Hawk’s Cay to be exact). I used free map software available online (Maptech Chart Navigator) and free up-to-date chart downloads through NOAA to plot my trip. I set waypoints using the software and then used a converter program to put these in the format so that I could upload them to the GPS via the Garmin software. If you find computers comfortable, it is a breeze.

To put to bed one complaint, I used this unit in an unprotected boat in the middle of August in the middle of Florida Bay while en route to the Keys. To be honest, I have never been to a place where the sun was more bright (never mind the fact that even with sunscreen we were seared). Not once, and I mean not once, did I have a problem reading the display. I had it pointed right at me and/or face up, with no roof/canopy/shade/anything to block the sun and I had no problem looking down at 60+ MPH to see where I was and how close I was following my preprogrammed path. This GPS got me through the shallows by the Keys, into Channel 5, the Hawk Channel, and finally Hawk’s Cay w/o a hitch. I was able to navigate through the Keys all weekend (full-sun) without any issue. The points of interest (i.e. gas stations, restaurants, CG stations, etc.) were handy to have too. Therefore, for me, this unit was absolutely the right choice.

When I came back from my trip, I was able to upload my exact path for the whole week to my computer and save it for future reference. I have used this GPS everywhere from Marco Island to Captiva and Cabbage Key and it has not given me a single issue. I do about 200-300 hours of boating per year and find this GPS to be a great tool to have aboard, especially if you break down at sea and need a tow (as we did recently – GPS coordinates got the tow boat to us much quicker then the old “I’m between X and Y inlet.”

Final Verdict: Recommended! I was hesitant reading some of the reviews but in the end am glad with the purchase.

CAPTAIN’S BACKUP – J. Walter Crankshank – Pennsylvania
I have a full-size chart plotter and radar on my 41 foot ketch. The 400c is a backup unit that is handy to use to check distances and points of interest without changing the displays on the full-size unit. It would be nice to have rechargable batteries in this unit, but the litium batts last more than a day under sail.

No Durability – L. K. Fink Jr. – Apollo Beach, FL
I acquired the Colorado 400c after my Map 76C used for a trip to Polynesia died. I had always kept 76c in a waterproof bag when using on water until last two times. It died from saltwater flooding it. So I carefully chose the new 400c for its marine charts, excellent visibility, and ease of use. I have used it many times since on the deck of my sea kayak. Under the clip attachment, it is now badly corroded and this week I discovered it is also corroded inside the “watertight” battery compartment. The corrosion has not yet affected its functioning except that it is becoming nearly impossible to change batteries. I have been very satisfied with all aspects of this GPS, but now figure I’ll have to buy a new one every year since I paddle several times a week year around. It simply is not designed to be used where saltwater can splash onto it for an extended period of time. I’m hopeful that a trip to Garmin can replace the corroded parts since it is still under warranty.

Garmin Colorado 400c – D. Parkyn – Florida, USA
Nice unit, with interesting and relatively simple interface. I just sent mine back to the factory because the first time I actually used it on the water, it got wet inside and died. So obviously, despite the o-ring seals, my unit was not very waterproof. It has great charts but I think there are better models on the water because of this issue. Perhaps an Aquapac would be a good thing to put it in and not a ziplock.

Garmin Colorado 400i Portable GPS System with Preloaded U.S. Inland Lake Maps

Garmin 010-00622-51

This unit is basically the same at the Colorado 400t, with a different preloaded map set. In the reviews for the 400t some folks have mentioned that the battery life is a tad short. Others have suggested using high capacity batteries. Both opinions are accurate. I like to use rechargeables and I have tested Duracell NiMH with an 1800 mAh rating, Sony NiMH with a 2500 mAh rating, and Duracell NiMH with a 2650 NiMN. I turned on the receiver, left the back light on the low setting, and checked it periodically, noting when each set failed. Obviously this is an approximation and I won’t report the details but there was a significant improvement with each step up in mAh. It was measured in hours, not minutes. I wish that the unit ran longer on a set, that is a fact, but I will just carry spare high capacity batteries. I have not used this in the field but have practiced with it extensively here in my home area. So far it is a great unit, better than my old Magellan. The technology has improved over the years.

Great stuff – Andy D. Driemeier – U.S.A
I purchased a Garmin 400i from Amazon, it has been a excellent product, the shipping came to my home in and near the time frame that was mentioned. I used the Garmin handheld Gps for month and I must say it has been fun and useful, since I am a bowhunter. I use the Garmin to scout and locate my deer stand hunting spots. I thank Amazon for making the purchase a breeze.

Garmin GPS Review – M. Leeper –
In the GPS realm, in my opinion their are only two companies to consider, they are Lowrance Electronics and Garmin. Upon a close review of available products, the Garmin wins hands down because the 400i Colorado has all of the cadilac features of those of the Lowrance Endura products but at a price that will shock you. Both the Lowrance Endura GPS and Garmin Colorado 400i GPS lines retail around 0 from the factory and their foo foo outlets. Thru this site, you will find you can purchase a Garmin Colorado 400i for 2. and get the product in less than a week. The Garmin has capability for easy downloading of topo maps and even turn by turn directions while driving. This is my third GPS unit over a period of the last 15 years and it is by far the easiest to use. I highly recommend it to all.

Confusing, frustrating… – W. Schmidt – Minneapolis, MN United States
Wow…this IS NOT a product for anyone unfamiliar with anything other than basic computer software management. I like the pretty maps and knowing where I am (within 10-20 yards) on the planet is kinda cool, but the promised features such as connecting with services like Google Earth? Forget about it. I have spent days–literally days–trying to figure out how to fix some freaking .msi file and no success. Garmin support is primarily in user forums and that is a maze of options. Dealers haven’t a clue. In short, this “Ease of Use” only gets two stars from me because I can turn this on and then turn it off. I also know how to use the “Rocker bar” thing. Whoopee. As far as meaningful use of maps and such. Zilch. A huge disappointment.

I’ll go on enjoying the pretty colors and the fun trip odometers and stuff, but unless you have a computer science degree or infinite time to spend loading and unloading software, I don’t see a reason why you would want this product if you want easy mapping features. It is a drag.
